Teeth Whitening With Smileo

We all dream of the perfect Hollywood smile don’t we?….. but many of us also love our daily coffee and a glass of red! This is the never ending battle that I have always faced. I have always been very fortunate to have naturally straight teeth and have used many home whitening products in my time, but I have always been conscious of the damage that peroxide based whitening products can cause, especially since I experienced a burnt gum incident a few years ago. This is why when Smileo told me about their safe, natural and easy to use products, I couldn’t wait to give them a try.

I was kindly sent the Smileo teeth whitening kit and the 3D Whitening strips to try. Having whitened my teeth at home for years, I was no stranger to either type of product, but what made Smileo products stand out for me is that Smileo’s tooth whitening products are vegan friendly, cruelty free as well as painless, 100% natural and peroxide free. Sounds pretty impressive right? Here’s how I got on.

Smileo Teeth Whitening Kit

This nifty little box of goodies promises to make teeth up to 8 shades whiter in only 7 days. The box contains 3 gel syringes, a mouth tray, UV light including battery (nice touch Smileo) and a colour card so that you can track your progress. I found the kit simple to use and loved that such great results can be achieved with only ten minutes use per day. I found the mouth tray pretty comfortable and it held against my teeth well and best of all I experienced NO sensitivity at all. The UV light is great quality and much stronger in brightness than others I have used in the past. I think this kit would be perfect for the time conscious, it’s compact and speedy with fantastic results. Smileo also offer a refill kit of syringes so that you can keep your white smile looking perfect without having to re purchase the accompanying products.

3D Whitening Strips

From the moment I used these strips I loved them. I have slightly wonky bottom teeth and have struggled to get whitening strips to stick to my lower teeth in the past. The shape of the lower strip is cleverly thought out and shaped for the perfect fit. The soft, thin strips are almost invisible on your teeth and are made from coconut shell! The strips are worn for around 30 minutes, although I did sometimes forget I had them on and left them for longer. I found the strips really comfortable, they have no nasty tastes and loved that I could still talk with them on my teeth. I saw instant results after using them and again experienced absolutely no sensitivity.

Overview

Since the using Smileo products, I feel so much more confident with my smile in photos and real life. I have already had compliments about my white teeth which is always a great confidence booster. I recommend Smileo to those who are looking to reverse years of stains on their teeth, without spending a fortune on doing it professionally. It’s a quick, and effective method at a fraction of the price it would be at the dentist. I love that Smileo products contain no nasties and I can truly see and feel the difference between using chemical based products in the past and natural products from Smileo now. My teeth feel strong, look great and have left me with a Hollywood white smile with ZERO sensitivity. As you can see my before and after results took my shade from around a 4-5 right up to a 1 in just 7 days! On my mind- April 2020

Despite one of my new years resolutions being to write more, lets face it, 2020 hasn’t exactly turned out to be what any of us imagined it would. I have been dodging my laptop in fear of producing content that seems unimportant at such an unprecedented time, when many are going through some of the hardest times of their lives. So I thought the best way to get back into the swing of blogging again is to have an open therapy session with my laptop and of course you lot!

Coronavirus Chat

I am not even going to go in to how hard it is not seeing family, visiting our favourite places and staying home, because it isn’t hard. Hard is loosing people you love to something like this and we have a duty to do as we are bloody told to protect those we love. In a word, the whole situation is horrific, as an emotional person my heart actually hurts for every person who has been affected or lost a loved one. I remember when the death toll first hit 200 cases a day having a total blub, the thought of that many people missing a loved one was just heart-breaking, yet here we are, loosing so many more and although as sad as ever, I feel as if I am growing some kind of thick skin, almost a numbness to the daily figures. I can’t decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing? I have always been someone who over thinks every situation, struggles with a lack of control and sudden change. I truly feel that out of this god awful situation I am learning to let go, realise that sometimes there are some things that I have no control over and to live in the moment more- as cliché at that sounds.

Money

Ahhhh the world of Instagram, influencers showing their mass online loungewear purchases, posts about online shopping to pass the lockdown time and a steady stream of affiliate links to high end skincare. I am not throwing shade on anyone, after all social media is some peoples only income and people need income more than ever right now. I have recently reached the big 10k followers and with this comes the opportunity to make some pocket money doing something I genuinely enjoy, I do however know that remaining conscious of the current climate will always be my top priority. Fact of the matter is that we are a single earner household and my husband has been furloughed due to the pandemic. There are ALWAYS going to be people worse off, I feel blessed that he has been furloughed and not made redundant, I feel equally blessed that we don’t have the worry of being self employed at this time. We are the lucky ones in this situation, but the cold hard facts still stand, that even with the government support of £2500 (before deductions) a month, it is significantly less than his usual monthly income and we are a family of five who have spent a year forking out every penny of our disposable income on a renovation. In short we are going to struggle over the next few months. We have had to take a Mortgage holiday and we have given ourselves a tight budget of £90 a week for food and spends, with these actions alone we are fortunate that our remaining bills will be paid and food will be on the table, but it goes without saying, there will be NO mass loungewear orders here.

Home Educating The Children

What a learning curve this has been. This is actually the thing I am finding is affecting my mental health most. Isabella is 10 going on 16 and often, my requests for her to get on with school work is met with rolling eyes and hunched shoulders. Sophia needs carrying through every single piece of work with an adult and up until my husband was furloughed, I was tackling this and my 3 year old wild child alone, while he worked from home. I am doing my best, I can promise that, but I can’t help but let feelings of doubt creep in that my best isn’t enough. I don’t think home learning is something we will ever fall in to a nice little routine of. As with every one of these unprecedented situations we are finding ourselves in, I am trying to concentrate on the things that I am grateful for and I am grateful that the children are at home, safe, well and spending quality time with us as a family….. oh and Gin…. big shout out to Gin.

I feel so much better for having a brain dump post and I truly hope that when I touch base again next month, the world is being kinder to everyone. I know there are people who will read this that are in a far worse situation than us and to you I send a huge virtual hug. If anyone ever wants a chat, you know where I am.

Easy Peasy Wall Panelling

Read below to find out how we created this look.

As you all know I have always been a huge fan of panelling, after creating a panelled wall in our master bedroom (see here for tutorial) I have managed to incorporate it in to 3 places in the house and I have no intention of stopping there!

We have a long and thin, traditional 1930s hallway with windows on the stair side and a long blank wall running along the other. The house would have once had a separate dining and living room but these rooms were knocked through and the door filled in by the previous owner which we love, but it did leave us with a very long blank wall where a door once sat. We decided to go for a taller and more rectangular panelling than we have previously done. I actually took my inspiration from the panels in the front door, being a total sucker for period features I always try and incorporate traditional aspects into the home where possible.

As soon as my husband had got over the fact that I had convinced him to panel yet another wall, we headed to B&Q for supplies. We had already drawn and planned how many strips we would like on the wall and from that, worked out our spacing and height. We decided on 1400mm Lengths that were 80mm wide. We brought a 3mm thick large sheet of MDF from B&Q and had it cut using their in house cutting service. The MDF was only £13 and gave us enough strips of wood to do the panelling twice if we wanted to. It always impresses me how affordable panelling can be.

We used Gripfil and pin nails to attach the strips to the wall. We started with the bottom horizontal pannels that ran along the skirting, because we had all of the strips cut to the same size we needed to join strips together to do this, we got them as close to each other as possible and used a finger of wood filler on the joins where required. We then began the vertical panels, and then the top horizontal panels at the end. The project came together really quickly and we had the panelling attached and together in around an hour. We used a nail punch, to punch in any nails so they were flush with the surface, used a small amount of wood filler on any joins and then began priming. We always use Zinsser BIN for priming.

A very messy photo, post priming

We have now painted and almost (story of our lives) completed the hallway and landing renovations. We painted the walls using The Decorating Centre Online hard wearing matte colour matched to Farrow and Ball sulking room pink. I am so pleased with the result. Panelling really is a fantastic way to transform a space on a small budget. If you give it a try, please do let me know how you get on!

Hulu Soy Wax ~

This month I was kindly sent some candles and wax melts from Hulu Soy Wax to try and I am really impressed so wanted to share them with you all. Hulu pride themselves on being a natural, healthy and more sustainable way to fragrance your home. Every product is handmade using the best quality, 100% soy wax. For the sweet scented lovers, the Rhubarb and vanilla gives a beautifully sweet scent, without being sickly and artificial smelling. The burn on the candles is great, really even and long lasting, a single candle easily fills a room with beautiful scent. I received the Amber Noir scented wax melts, I absolutely love the re-sealable packaging, I found this so handy when it came to storing the melts and again love that all packaging is recyclable and environmentally friendly. The Amber Noir is a stunning fragrance, with a luxurious depth and notes of dark balsamic fruits and sensual exotic forests. The melts are long lasting and the cute heart shape reflects that all of the Hulu products are made with love. Lastly I sampled the Pink Grapefruit and Basil candle, the smell is a deliciously fresh and vibrant scent, I found this candle was very fast to fill the room with scent and I love an uplifting scent like this. From sleek design to a great range of gorgeous scents, Hulu soy wax have made it to my February Favourites list. Check out Hulu website to view the huge range available and keep your eye on their social media here.

George At ASDA Homeware~

If you follow my Instagram you will know that I have a serious obsession with Art Deco interiors, especially fan/shell print. I have recently ordered a couple of bits from Asda Home for our master bedroom and I love them, I ordered a runner and some new bedding and not only were these a total bargain at around £15 each but they are so on trend. My lust list for Asda home is still getting longer and I have asked for some deco fan print mugs for my birthday. Keep it coming ASDA!

Fashion

Print Dresses~

I will keep this section short for now as I am in NO way any kind of fashion expert. I am however and always have loved fashion and have a bit of a clothes obsession. We are trying to get on top of our finances this year after almost completing phase one of the house so I have been on a bit of a spending ban, but I went shopping in town the other day and could not resist this bargain dress from Zara, reduced from £30 down to £10. Anyone who knows me will vouch for the fact that I love a bit of leopard print and I love a floaty midi dress. I love buying pieces that I can dress up or down and that I can wear through the seasons. I dressed this up for an event the other day with tights and boots but am looking forward to wearing it in the spring with trainers for a more casual look.

Beauty

Pixi Glow Tonic~

Really bloody late to this party aren’t I? On the same little shopping trip as the bargain dress, I stumbled into the dregs of the Boots post Christmas sale and found a little Pixi miniature set that included glow tonic. I have wanted to try this for a long time but as someone with temperamental skin, I am always cautious to add new things into my skincare routine especially when they are quite expensive products. I am about a week into trying this out and WOW, I can see where the hype has come from. My skin feels plumper and softer since using it and after my miniature has finished I will be buying the larger bottle and continuing to keep this in my routine. I am surprised how far the product goes, I am only about a quarter of the way through the miniature after a week so although a larger bottle is a bit more pricy at £18, I think it will be value for money.

Primark Double Wear Dupe~

I am an Estee Lauder Double Wear girl through and through, I have tried just about every foundation on the market but I always come back to Double Wear. I have heard lots of good things about the Primark dupe so was eager to try it for myself. I have been using it for around two weeks now and for the money I am really impressed. Is it exactly the same as Double Wear?….. No. The selection of shades in comparison to DW was minimal, I was fortunate to find a pretty good match in the Nude to my usual 2W2 Rattan shade, although I would say the Primark is slightly lacking in yellow pigment, it still works well for me. Consistency wise the Primark is slightly thicker than Double Wear but gives great and perfecting coverage… maybe even more so that DW upon initial application. My only qualm is that it does not stay flawless all day like DW does, by around 4pm I look slightly cakey and need to have a bit of a blot, but all in all I am impressed. Despite it not quite having the same longevity as my favourite foundation I am going to continue to use the Primark dupe during the week and save the Double Wear for special occasions, it offers a huge cost saving at just £5 per bottle I could buy 6 bottles for the price of my usual foundation, so yes for cost saving purposes this is a good dupe and that is why it has made my February favourites…… but please do not expect miracles.

I hope you have enjoyed my first ever favourites list and look forward to sharing more next month.

Style over Practicality? The roll top shower bath edition

When it comes to interiors my heart always rules my head. You will often find me standing in a shop, holding something impractical and trying to convince my husband that we need it in our home. If I had a pound for every time I have heard the words “Chynna we have enough cushions on the bed” I would be writing this from my sun lounger in the Maldives. Unlike myself, my husband looks to purchase useful and functional items, I am all about the look and style. In this blog post I will be delving into the good and bad of the ultimate style vs practicality item in my home. Ladies and gentlemen I present to you my most treasured possession, the bain of my husbands existence and the truth about…..

A roll top shower bath

It’s the most blindingly obvious style vs practicality example in our home, (although I am sure I could name a few). I get a lot of questions on my Instagram about the roll top shower bath and I am always sure to be honest, but I do feel that what I try to explain, may come across as confusing, so I will have a better go here. I can’t tell you the fight I had to put up to get Mr J to agree this beauty. I had always dreamt of having a roll top bath and until we knocked the toilet and bathroom together and saw what space we had, it still wasn’t a guarantee. When we were planning the bathroom we spent hours drawing out different positions and although we did eventually find a way to make a separate shower and bath fit, it just was not what either of us had envisaged and felt like it had very little floor space. Shower baths are really commonly used in bathrooms as a great way to save space so this seemed like the perfect solution to keep the bathroom feeling spacious, but I just could not let go of my roll top bath dreams. I scoured Pinterest constantly and this is when I noticed a few roll top shower baths… I was off! I gathered my evidence together in the form of the three Pinterest images I had found and a mock Victorian plumbing order and excitedly presented it to my husband. He seemed on board, he loved the look and got to work drawing a scale drawing, it looked to be the perfect solution, then in true Mr J style, he came at me with questions over functionality! “If it stands away from the wall will it not leak water down the back?” “Don’t shower curtains cling to your body and feel horrid” “what if standing in the bath causes it to become weaker” I knew I had some convincing to do…

Luckily in most cases my husband lives by the mantra ‘happy wife happy life’ and as I am sure you are all aware, I convinced him a roll top shower bath was a great idea. We have now had the bathroom completed for around 6 months so I can finally give my true verdict on whether it was a good idea or not.

The Good

  • We love the look- I don’t think I expected how much I would love the look of the over bath shower rail, the way the curtains fall and how well it would work with the rest of the bathroom. I could not be more happy with how the bathroom looks.
  • Because we saved space we got to go for a huge bath- The bath is my absolute pride and joy, it doesn’t look it in photos but the bath is a great size, even my husband who is 6ft is really comfortable in it, it is much longer than a standard bath also meaning that all 3 kiddies fit in comfortably and with it being double ended they don’t seem to flood the bathroom while playing like they used to.
  • No glass enclosure to clean- Lets face it glass shower enclosures are a pig to clean and with three sets of little mucky hands, I think a glass enclosure would have had sticky prints on it more often than not.

The bad

  • During showering water gets everywhere- Spoiler alert, Aaron was right! Water does go everywhere IF you don’t take precautions. If you clip the shower curtains at the back with a hair clip and make sure you angle the curtains correctly and don’t fling your arms about too much then its absolutely fine- my husband does not have the patience for this!
  • There is nowhere to place your products apart from near your feet.
  • Aaron is tall so when he steps into the bath it makes him even taller, meaning his head is very close to the fixed shower head
  • Because our shower and bath are together they are always in use, so I clean it all constantly.

So there you have it, the good, the bad and the ugly. We are fortunate that we will be planning a downstairs shower room into our extension, somewhere my husband can fulfil his shower of dreams, so this room will be used a lot less in a couple of years time. While I can totally agree with my husband that it is not the best shower I have ever been in and it’s most certainly a style over practicality purchase…. I have no regrets! I love our bathroom, it is everything I had imagined it to be and I am so glad that I went with my gut. I am learning along the way that in order to create a home you love, you have to go with the things you love, practical or not!

An Evening with Paige Bloss Hair

For me, nothing feels like more of a treat than getting my hair done. As a busy mum of three I don’t get to spend as much time in a salon chair as I would like, this is why when I was invited along for a pamper with the lovely Paige, I jumped at the opportunity. We met Paige at the gorgeous and stylish Legally Blonde salon in the heart of Salisbury. The salon space is beautiful and well decorated and although we arrived rain soaked and freezing, we were greeted with a salon of friendly faces and a little glass of Bubbles…. perfect.

A glass of bubbles on arrival.

As I sat down for my consultation, Paige asked me about my hair care routine and how I normally style my hair, we chatted about the best plan of action and headed over to the calm and tranquil wash area. Paige told me all about the products she would be using to wash and treat my hair and the reasons why. I found this really interesting and it was clear that Paige knew the perfect formula for my tired and rain frizzed hair. The salon offer an abundant range of shampoo, conditioner and styling products so there really is something to suit everyone. There is nothing I love more than a great salon hair wash and Paige did not disappoint.

The salon styling is elegant and beautiful

As I sat back down and Paige reached for the styling products I explained that my fine hair seems to always get oily when I use styling products. Myself and Paige had a chat about what kind of products I should be using based on my hair type and she recommended and used some great ones from some luxurious brands such as GHD and Fudge. The following morning my hair was still lovely and shiny and I didn’t have to reach for the dry shampoo!

After my blow dry Paige gave my already wavy hair a little helping hand and put some gorgeous bouncy curls in, my hair felt healthy and full of bounce and the whole process had felt like a real treat. I walked away feeling relaxed and a lot more in the know about my hairs needs, this was down to Paige’s knowledgeable and friendly advice.

Overall I had the most lovely evening, Paige surprised us with a gorgeous goodie bag after our treatments. I left feeling thoroughly spoilt, relaxed and happy. I highly recommend anyone local to Salisbury giving Paige a visit, not only are her services affordable but her friendly and smiley persona will have you visiting again and again. Paige has an extensive knowledge and evident passion for her work. I recommend checking out some of her work on her Instagram account.

Paige has kindly given me a discount code offering a fantastic £10 off her services if you quote HAIRGOALS10 when booking via Instagram DM or calling Legally Blonde and asking for Paige…. share the love with your friends and family.
